This complex double junction was situated about a mile from Temple Meads on the London and Bath route into Bristol.  There were spurs to St Philip’s Marsh Shed and the Bristol avoiding line, used by most through freights from the West and also a number of passenger trains on Summer Saturdays from the South West to the Midlands, North West and North East.  Another spur joined up with the Bristol to South Wales line at Dr Days Bridge Junction.  Some passenger trains from South Wales to Salisbury and the south used this spur, dropping off passengers for Bristol at Stapleton Road Station and avoiding Temple Meads.  The use of multiple units on these trains in 1964 meant that the practice was discontinued.
