Lawrence Hill

Lawrence Hill Station, still open today, although a shadow of its former self in the 1960’s, is the first station out of Bristol Temple Meads on the mainline to South Wales, the North of England and the branch line to Severn Beach.  The former Midland Main Line towards Mangotsfield and Gloucester passes over the Western Mainline at the end of the station platform

It was an ideal place for steam enthusiasts in 1964 as all trains arriving from the North West, North East, Midlands and from South Wales would pass through.  In addition, those Summer Saturday extras which avoided Temple Meads would gain access to South Wales or the Midlands via North Somerset Junction and Lawrence Hill.  Trains on the Midland Mainline would be tackling Fishponds Bank, often with the aid of a banking engine, generally a Midland 4F.
