Home Steam in Bristol Steam Shed St Philips Marsh Steam Shed Barrow Road Bristol Steam Workings 1964

Steam sheds were not just home to engines, but provided a varied working environment for the railway men who worked there.  From Shedmaster and Foreman (who I tried to avoid on my almost daily visits in the early to mid sixties) to drivers, firemen, cleaners and others.

I have been fortunate to be in contact with two firemen at the shed in the sixties, John Clark and Mark Meeks.  They have kindly sent me details of workings and copies of photos they took at the shed of themselves and their colleagues.  They have provided me with an insight into the activities and management of the shed and its workings which I did not have. They also show how a difficult working environment can be a challenging, yet enjoyable activity.
